A machine tool is a machine that makes other machines, and it is also a machine that can manufacture machine tools themselves. Turning, milling, planing, grinding, boring, drilling, electrical discharge machining, shearing, bending, laser cutting, and many other processes are all examples of machining methods. In essence, machining involves transforming a metal blank into the desired part geometry, with attention to both dimensional accuracy and geometric accuracy. Any equipment capable of performing these functions is referred to as a machine tool. CNC machine tools evolved from conventional machine tools; they are highly precise, high-efficiency, automated machine tools. The term “CNC” stands for “computer numerical control.”

Mechanical machining refers to the process of shaping metal workpieces into the desired form, with precision requirements encompassing both dimensional accuracy and geometric accuracy. Any equipment capable of performing these functions is referred to as a machine tool. CNC machine tools evolved from conventional machine tools; they are highly precise, high-efficiency, automated machine tools. The term “CNC” stands for “computer numerical control.”
  A CNC machine tool, in simple terms, is a numerically controlled machine tool—an automated machine equipped with a program-controlled system. This system can logically process programs encoded with control codes or other symbolic instruction sets, decode them, and then execute the corresponding machine movements to perform part machining. The control unit of a CNC machine tool is where all operation and monitoring functions are carried out; it serves as the “brain” of the machine. When we refer to CNC equipment, we are typically talking about CNC lathes and machining centers.
  The use of CNC machine tools to complete the machining process has characteristics that general machine tools cannot match:
  1. Productivity can be significantly improved. Once the workpiece is securely clamped and the pre-programmed machining sequence is entered, the machine tool automatically executes the machining process. When changing parts, only the CNC program needs to be modified, which substantially reduces machining time and enables productivity to exceed that of conventional machine tools by several times.
  2. It boasts exceptionally high machining accuracy and remarkably stable product quality. Since machining is performed automatically according to pre-programmed instructions, and software can be used to calibrate and compensate for any deviations, extremely high machining accuracy can be achieved. Today, virtually all high-end, precision, and cutting-edge products manufactured by enterprises are produced using CNC machine tools.
  3. The high degree of automation significantly reduces labor intensity and, to a large extent, blurs the distinction between manual and intellectual work. Operating CNC machine tools involves a highly technological process, placing demanding requirements on operators and even higher demands on maintenance technicians. As such, CNC operators no longer fit the traditional definition of “blue-collar workers.” Those who can operate CNC machines are referred to as “gray-collar” workers; those who can repair CNC machines are called “silver-collar” workers; and those who possess both operational and maintenance expertise are known as “gold-collar” workers.
